Hospitalised Pope Calls For Peace, ‘Truth’ In Conflicts

In a letter to Italy’s top newspaper on Tuesday, Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for a month due to illness, called for an end to war and asked the media to “serve the truth”.

The eighty-eight-year-old Catholic leader emphasized the necessity of ethical journalism during times of conflict, saying that the media had a responsibility to “feel the full impact of words” and to maintain composure.

“They are facts that create human surroundings; they are never just words. In a letter dated March 14, Francis wrote to the Corriere della Sera, “They can unite or separate, serve or utilize the truth.”

“We need to disarm the Earth, disarm minds, and disarm language. There is a strong demand for introspection, serenity, and complexity.

“Diplomacy and international organizations require new vitality and legitimacy, while war just destroys communities and the environment, without delivering solutions to conflicts,” he said.
The letter was sent in response to a note delivered to the pope, who has been in the Gemelli hospital in Rome since February 14, by Luciano Fontana, the director of Corriere.

“In this moment of illness… violence becomes even more ludicrous,” said Francis, who frequently urges an end to hostilities worldwide.

He remarked, “Human fragility, in reality, has the power to make us more aware about what makes us live and what kills, what lasts and what passes.”

The Argentine pope stated that peace “needs dedication, work, silence, and words.”

Following a crucial period during which breathing crises prompted concerns for Francis’s life, doctors have reported that his condition is now stable. However, the Vatican has not stated when he would be released from the hospital.

The Vatican announced on Monday night that he was now breathing independently for brief periods of time.

Francis has been using a cannula, a plastic tube that is inserted into his nostrils and provides high-flow oxygen, during the day and an oxygen mask at night for at least two weeks.

For the first time during the day, he is now switching to a lower flow, it stated.

Francis has alternated between rest and prayer and working when he is able at the hospital.

Notwithstanding his advancements, there is still conjecture that, like his predecessor Benedict XVI, he may finally resign because of his vulnerability.

During a visit last week, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin informed reporters on Monday that Francis’ health had improved.

However, when asked if the topic of the pope’s resignation had come up, he said, “No, no, no, certainly not.”

S Jaishankar Highlights UN’s Blunder On Kashmir, Calls For New World Order

The injustice done by the West at the UN over Kashmir was highlighted at The Raisina Dialogue – a global multilateral conference held in New Delhi each year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar did not mince his words as he showed how the United Nations had faltered in its understanding and approach to the issue.

Mr Jaishankar noted that the “longest-standing” illegal occupation of a territory globally after World War II has been experienced by India – in Kashmir. The enitre state of Jammu and Kashmir, which includes Gilgit and Baltistan, called Northern Areas before 1970, had acceded to India in 1947. Pakistan, in a unilateral act of aggression, invaded Jammu and Kashmir and has been illegally occupying parts of the Indian Union since then.

Speaking about Kashmir at the forum today, Mr Jaishankar highlighted the selective approach and application of global rules on issues pertaining to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

https://github.com/CharlieHaris/Preparations2025/issues/10

As he raised concerns over historical injustices in dealing with certain issues, he batted for establishing a “reformed, strong, and fair” United Nations. Explaining how the UN had greatly erred in not condemning Pakistan’s illegal occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Jaishankar said that the “attacker” (Pakistan) and the “victim” (India) were clubbed under the same bracket.

We all talk about territorial integrity and sovereignty. We all concur that it is an essential idea. It is the cornerstone of international law. The longest-standing unlawful presence—or, I would say, occupation—of a territory by another nation after World War II concerns India, as we seen in Kashmir,” he stated.

“We then proceeded to the UN, but the invasion was turned into a debate. Thus, the victim and the assailant were treated equally. Which parties were at fault? USA, Australia, Canada, Belgium, and the UK. I apologize, but that one raises some doubts in my mind,” the minister stated.

Global norms and regulations must be applied consistently, according to Mr. Jaishankar, who supports a strong and reformed UN. He declared, “We need a strong UN, but a strong UN requires a fair UN.”

Calling for a new and reformed world system, he stated that “a strong global order must have some basic coherence of principles.” “Look, I do believe that we require both a domestic and an international order. Similar to the necessity for a national society, an international one is also necessary, and those who stand to gain from an absence of order are not limited to large nations. I contend that any nation that takes chances, adopts radical stances, or tests the system will ultimately benefit from the chaos. We have observed in our own neighborhood, after all. It is not necessary to be a large nation to be dangerous. Smaller neighbors of mine have performed admirably. Therefore, we should all first recognize the significance of an order.

Mr. Jaishankar gave another example, omitting Pakistan, of how the West has had a biased perspective: “We (India) have military control to our east – in Myanmar.” They are no-no. To the west, however, we have them even more. Do you know where? To the West, they appear to be fine. It is crucial, in my opinion, to examine how the world has operated over the past 80 years, be truthful about it, and recognize that shareholdings and balances have evolved with time. We must have another discussion. To be honest, we require a different sequence in that regard.

The minister made these remarks at the session on ‘Thrones and Thorns: Defending the Integrity of Nations’ at The Raisina Dialogue today.

World Bank Officials Accused Of “Hypocrisy” After Jet Travel To UN Summit

According to The New York Post, the World Bank is facing criticism after its representatives traveled to a United Nations climate summit in Azerbaijan last November and left behind a carbon footprint equivalent to 350 automobiles’ worth of emissions annually.

254 World Bank representatives flew to the oil-rich country for the 12-day meeting, according to a leaked guest list. According to the UN’s Carbon Emissions Calculator, they produced at least 1,500 metric tonnes of carbon emissions during their round-trip journey from Washington, DC, to Baku.

According to the research, which used data from the US Environmental Protection Agency, this amount of pollution is equivalent to the energy consumption of 200 American households or the yearly greenhouse gas emissions of 350 cars.

Nile Gardiner, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, told The New York Post, “This is a huge show of hypocrisy from the gilded elites of the World Bank.” “They practically live the high life in total opposition to everything they preach, while lecturing the world on environmental policy.”

A World Bank representative defended the practice, stating that private jets were only utilized as a “rare exception” when commercial travel was not feasible due to security, expense, or efficiency concerns.

The disclosures come after earlier claims of opulent World Bank travel arrangements. The NY Post revealed in November that senior officials had reserved the upscale Q Suites on Qatar Airways for their trip to Azerbaijan eighteen months prior to the summit.

World Bank President Ajay Banga came under increased attention after social media pictures revealed that he was traveling with his aide, Jessica Phan, on a private Gulfstream jet. Later, Ms. Phan, a former official in the Obama and Biden administrations, removed the photos from her Instagram. In order to attend the UN climate meeting, Mr. Banga also rented a Gulfstream jet.

The World Bank’s climate funding practices have already under criticism. Oxfam, a British non-governmental organization, accused the organization in October of “lost track” of $24 billion allocated for climate efforts.

Former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross proposed that Elon Musk, the CEO of DOGE, who has promised to cut government waste, may focus on World Bank expenditures.

Joe Rogers, the former ambassador of the United States under President Ronald Reagan, told The New York Post that “development money has historically included luxury travel.” This seems to be common fare when talking about the poorest of the poor. It is a slap in the face to American taxpayers and completely disgusting.

Grok AI Can Make Memes In Seconds, Musk Confirms With Trump Example

Elon Musk has disclosed that Grok, an AI chatbot, can produce memes in less than a minute. This followed a post on X that included a meme of US President Donald Trump saying, “Everything is computer,” while standing in front of a tanker.

“Making a meme on Grok takes less than a minute,” the user wrote.

Musk responded to the message by confirming the assertion with the single word “True.”

Last month, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, unveiled Grok 3, claiming it was ten times more powerful than Grok 2. The new model is said to perform exceptionally well on tasks requiring creativity, in-depth study, and reasoning.

Musk previously posted another meme highlighting Grok AI’s supremacy over rival AI models ChatGPT, Google AI, and Meta AI. The meme showed three penguins saluting one with sunglasses and a captain’s cap, and it was based on a popular social media template from the animated movie Madagascar.

The AI is intended to facilitate “natural and engaging interactions” and has a distinct “rebellious streak,” addressing subjects that other AI models might shy away from, according to Grok’s official website.

Musk clarified the origin of the AI’s moniker during the Grok 3 launch demo, stating, “The phrase originates from Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. It denotes having a thorough and profound understanding of something. According to him, two essential components of Grok’s operation are profound comprehension and empathy.

Grok 3 had to figure out a workable path for a transfer from Earth to Mars and return as part of its launch demonstration. The AI demonstrated its sophisticated problem-solving skills by successfully calculating and visualizing the trajectory.

With its sophisticated computing power, high-level thinking, and quick meme-generation abilities, Grok 3 seeks to subvert the industry’s reliance on established AI models.

Musk and the xAI team decided in April 2024 that they needed to construct their own data center in order to create the most cutting-edge AI. Due to a tight timeline, the crew completed the first 100,000 GPUs in 122 days, which they described as a “monumental achievement.”

Grok has been continuously enhanced by this enormous processing capacity, which enables it to operate in three modes: DeepSearch, Think, and Big Mind.

“Genocidal Acts”: UN Slams Israel’s Attacks On Gaza Reproductive Centres

Israel committed “genocidal” crimes in Gaza by systematically destroying institutions for sexual and reproductive healthcare, according to the findings of a United Nations study released Thursday.

Israel “deliberately targeted and destroyed” the major fertility center in the Palestinian area, according to the UN Commission of Inquiry. At the same time, Israel imposed a blockade and prevented aid, including medication that would ensure safe pregnancies, births, and neonatal care.

“Israel categorically rejects the false charges,” a statement from the country’s mission in Geneva said.

“By the systematic destruction of sexual and reproductive healthcare, Israeli authorities have damaged in part the reproductive capability of Palestinians in Gaza as a group,” the panel concluded in a statement.

It claimed that this amounted to “two types of genocidal activities” during Israel’s war in Gaza, which was initiated following the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel by Hamas militants.

Acts committed with the goal to completely or partially eradicate a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group are considered crimes under the United Nations’ genocide treaty.

Israel was accused of “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life likely to bring about its physical death” and “imposing measures intended to prohibit births within the group” out of the five categories in the probe.

In a statement, commission chair Navi Pillay stated, “These violations have not only caused significant immediate physical and emotional pain and suffering to women and girls, but irrevocable long-term repercussions on the mental health and reproductive and fertility prospects of Palestinians as a group.”

In May 2021, the UN Human Rights Council created the three-member Independent International Commission of Inquiry to look into claims of violations of international law in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Former UN rights chief Pillay presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and was a judge on the International Criminal Court.

A “predetermined and preconceived political objective… in a shameless attempt to blame the Israel Defence Forces” was the charge laid out by Israel against the inquiry.

IVF clinic destruction

According to the study, Gaza’s primary in-vitro reproductive center, the Al-Basma IVF Centre, as well as maternity facilities and wards have been methodically demolished.

According to the study, when Al-Basma was shelled in December 2023, about 4,000 embryos were destroyed at a clinic that saw between 2,000 and 3,000 patients each month.

The commission concluded that all of the reproductive materials kept for future Palestinian conceptions were purposefully assaulted and destroyed by the Israeli Security Forces.

No reliable proof that the structure was utilized for military reasons was discovered by the commission.

Devastation “was a measure meant to restrict births among Palestinians in Gaza, which is a genocidal act,” the report said.

The research also stated that the injury to pregnant, breastfeeding, and new mothers in Gaza was on a “unprecedented magnitude” and that it had an irreparable effect on Gazans’ ability to procreate.

The commission came to the conclusion that such underlying acts “amount to crimes against humanity” and that the Palestinians were being purposefully destroyed as a group.

The report was released following the commission’s Tuesday and Wednesday public sessions in Geneva, where witnesses and victims of sexual abuse were heard.

It came to the conclusion that Israel had committed “acts that constitute the crime against humanity of murder and the war crime of deliberate killing” by specifically targeting civilian women and girls.

Additionally, it stated that “acts that amount to the crime against humanity of extermination” had occurred when Israeli authorities’ restrictions on access to reproductive health care caused women and girls to die from pregnancy and childbirth-related issues.

The commission also noted that the Israeli Security Forces’ “standard operating procedures” against Palestinians include forced public nudity and stripping, sexual harassment, including threats of rape, and sexual assault.

US Woman Held Stepson Captive For Over 20 Years. How He Escaped

A Connecticut mother has been accused of holding her stepson captive in terrible circumstances for more than two decades. The stepson, now 32, revealed he deliberately set the house on fire last month in an attempt to gain “freedom.”

Kimberly Sullivan, 56, was detained and charged with the horrific crime on Wednesday, a month after the awful living arrangement came to light before the family’s Waterbury home caught fire, authorities said.

According to court documents, Ms Sullivan left the house, and on February 17, her stepson, who weighed only 68 pounds, was subsequently dragged out by firefighters.

He admitted he ignited the fire in a small storage area where he was forced to sleep. He told firemen, “I wanted my freedom.”

According to the authorities, the mother was holding her severely starved stepson captive in “something out of a horror movie” before he set fire to their home in order to flee the “inhumane” and appalling conditions.

Police said the man was “very malnourished” and “quite unclean,” with “matted and untidy” hair and what looked like decaying teeth, according to Ms. Sullivan’s warrant.

According to reports, the victim had never gone to a doctor or dentist since he was a little child. He added that his stepmother had kept him confined since he was around eleven years old.

The man told authorities that the door to his room was always locked. It was first a chain lock, then a padlock, and finally a sliding bolt.

The warrant stated that after being taken out of school, his weekday routine and imprisonment remained “brutally regular” for the remainder of his life.

He was given permission to leave his room for a short while in the morning to complete home chores, which could take anything from fifteen minutes to two hours.

The man went on to say that when he was twelve years old, he was moved to a smaller room that was eight feet by nine feet for storage. It had no heat in the winter and no air conditioning in the summer.

When the boy was in fourth grade, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) was called by his school. According to school officials, the youngster was always hungry, and his stepmother told him to lie and say that everything was OK.

Fernando Spagnolo, the chief of police in Waterbury, said, “The agony this victim underwent for over 20 years is both tragic and incomprehensible.”

Paula Depina, a former neighbor who used to reside next door, claimed that whenever she saw him in the windows, she always had a bad feeling.

First degree assault, second degree kidnapping, first degree unlawful restraint, first degree cruelty to others, and first degree reckless endangerment were among the charges brought against Ms. Sullivan.

According to the lawyer for Ms. Sullivan, his client was “swept away” and “stunned by what is being said.” Ms. Sullivan was declared “innocent and she has every intention of contesting this allegation,” they stated.

South Korean Air Force Pilots Charged Over Accidental Bombing Of Village

Due to an unintentional bombing of a hamlet during a training exercise last week that left at least 29 people injured and caused significant property damage, South Korean military authorities accused two Air Force pilots on Thursday with criminal negligence.

According to a statement from the ministry’s Criminal Investigation Command, officials from the defense ministry have verified that pilot mistakes made when entering coordinates into the aircraft systems were “direct factors” in the unintentional bombing.

According to the command, the pilots were accused for criminal carelessness causing bodily harm, and the event is still being investigated.

During live-fire drills, eight unguided air-to-surface bombs dropped from two fighter jets landed on a Pocheon village close to the North Korean border.

The South Korean and American troops use a number of locations in Pocheon and the surrounding areas as training grounds.

For years, locals have voiced concerns about possible safety hazards and disruptions caused by military forces being mobilized in the region.

According to a ministry official, the two pilots have been removed from flight responsibilities and their flight mission certification will be reviewed.

The chief of staff of the Air Force has expressed regret for the mishap and promised to reassess mission protocols in order to avoid future occurrences.

Citing the likelihood that the bombs could have fallen north of the border, North Korea, which frequently condemns military exercises by the South Korean and American troops, has claimed the accident demonstrated the risk of the exercises leading to armed confrontation.

Controversy Erupts In France Over An Ad Featuring Eiffel Tower Wearing A Hijab

A Dutch modest fashion brand, Merrachi, has ignited controversy in France with a promotional video featuring the iconic Eiffel Tower draped in a hijab. The ad, which was part of a pro-hijab campaign, aimed to promote the freedom to wear the Islamic headscarf. However, it sparked outrage among French politicians, who deemed it “dangerous” and contrary to “French values”. The video was shared on Instagram by Merrachi with the caption, ”Spotted: The Eiffel Tower wearing MERRACHI, mashallah! Looks like she just joined the modest fashion community.”

The ad has sparked intense reactions in France, with many criticizing the brand for its perceived blending of French and Islamic symbols.

Lisette Pollet, a French MP from the right-wing National Rally party, called the ad offensive to France’s “democratic values and heritage”. “Unacceptable! The Eiffel Tower, the symbol of France, has been hijacked by the Merrachi brand, which covers it with an Islamic veil in a provocative advertisement,” she wrote on X.

Her party colleague, Jerome Buisson, echoed similar sentiments, labelling the ad a “terrifying political project” and a “unacceptable provocation”. Economist Philippe Murer, co-founder of the Citizens’ Political Movement, escalated the controversy by demanding that Merrachi’s stores in France be shut down and its website blocked.

Bombs Disguised As Perfume Gift Sets Found At Russian Airport: Officials

In the most recent attempted attack that Moscow has attributed to Kyiv, Russia’s security service announced Thursday that it had detained a man on suspicion of delivering letter bombs to military officials.

Since starting its full-scale military attack on Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has detained hundreds of citizens for conspiracy and pro-Kyiv sabotage.

Born in 2003, the suspect mailed explosives-containing packages to “military personnel and authorities in the Moscow, Voronezh, Krasnodar and Saratov areas” earlier this month, according to the FSB.

The bombs were found before they were opened during screening procedures at Chelyabinsk airport, and security personnel stopped the attack.

It further stated, “Five packages carrying the homemade explosive devices, disguised as perfume gift sets, were discovered.”

It said that when the suspect, a Russian national, shipped the devices, “Ukrainian special services” ceased communicating with him despite having recruited him in exchange for a monetary reward.

Ukraine has previously targeted military officials it claims are behind Russia’s offensive, though it usually stays silent about attacks that are stopped.

Anyone suspected of acting on behalf of Ukraine has been the target of Russian security forces’ dogged pursuit, and those apprehended are frequently found guilty of treason.

PM Modi Offers Gangajal From Maha Kumbh Into Grand Bassin In Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mingled the Ganges’ hallowed waters, which were transported from the Prayagraj Mahakumbh, into the Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) at Port Louis, Mauritius, on Wednesday as a symbolic act of cultural and spiritual ties.

In addition to sharing India’s rich spiritual legacy with the world, this act represents the deepening of ties between Mauritius and India. In the recently finished Prayagraj Mahakumbh, millions of devotees gathered to take a sacred dip in the Ganges, marking a grand celebration of devotion and unity.

For Hindus, the Ganga Talao, a holy lake in Mauritius, is a significant destination. PM Modi strengthened the spiritual and cultural ties between Mauritius and India by incorporating the Gangajal into the lake.

The Grand Bassin near Port Louis is another name for the Ganga Talao. At the Ganga Talao, the Prime Minister offered prayers, paid respects, and conducted Aarti.

According to a CNN story, the Hindus of Mauritius consider Ganga Talao to be a sacred lake.

CNN reports that in 1887, a priest reported having a dream in which he saw the Ganga Talao waters streaming from the goddess Ganga. As word of this discovery spread, Ganga Talao was changed and directly connected to the powerful Ganges.

According to CNN, the Ganga Talao serves as “a cultural touchstone” and a connection to the South Asian heritage of the Indian emigrants living in Mauritius.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented President Dharambeer Gokhool of Mauritius with holy Sangam water from the Mahakumbh, presented in a beautiful copper and brass container, as a sign of friendship and cultural exchange.

Notably, Mahakumbh 2025 was observed in Prayagraj this year. It came to an end on the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri, which was a historic occasion full of divine energy, spiritual union, and supernatural importance.

Millions of pilgrims bathe in holy waters during the world’s largest peaceful gathering, the Kumbh Mela, in an attempt to atone for their sins and achieve spiritual freedom.

Another important item in Hindu culture is the pot made of brass and copper that is used to hold the sacred water. Tradition holds that keeping Ganga water in copper or brass containers is auspicious since it is said to preserve the water’s spirituality and purity.

The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius, presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the country’s highest national honor earlier in the day.

On National Day, thousands of people braved the pouring rain to attend the event and watch their leader get the honor.

The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation was jointly opened by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius. According to PM Modi, the institute will act as a center for research and education.
